Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A solid bronze handle with a fabulous leopard at one end and a gorgon face at the other, finely cast via the lost wax (cire perdue) process. Note the level of detail and the expressive visage of the fierce leopard with its leering eyes, wide snout, alert ears, incised whiskers, and a wide-open mouth as if declaring its presence with a vociferous ROAR! Appreciate how the curve of the handle doubles as the dramatic arch of the wild feline's back - detailed with an incised coat and an upraised tail in high relief - with a leaf pattern down the curved remainder of the handle. What's more, the leopard's dramatic pose is heightened by its outstretched paws, rendered with intimidating claws, and his spotted coat is marked by concentric circular motifs across the chest. At the opposite end is the face of a Gorgon staring steadfastly ahead as if to protect the precious contents of the oinochoe to which this handle was once affixed. Size: 7.125" H (18.1 cm); 8.875" H (22.5 cm) on included custom stand.

The leopard was a symbol of virility in this culture, and the god Bacchus, patron of a highly sexualized mystery cult, is often depicted wearing a leopard skin and/or riding a leopard. The gorgon represents one of three mythological sisters who had hair made of live venomous snakes and terrifying faces said to turn their beholders to stone, Medusa being the most famous of these creatures.
