Description:

Roman, late Imperial Period, ca. 4th to early 5th century CE. A beautiful cast-bronze oil lamp with a teardrop-shaped base, pinched walls, rolling shoulders, a rimmed fill hole, and a slender wick spout. The shoulders are decorated with a register of repeating semicircular curves stemming from a raised border strip which delineates the neck channel. A stylized rooster stands just behind the fill hole with clawed feet, a puffed-out abdomen, an erect head, and a curved, feathery tail doubling as the lamp's handle. The exterior is enveloped in layers of lustrous green and brown patina, making this a fantastic example of utilitarian artwork from ancient Rome! Size: 4.25" L x 2.75" W x 3" H (10.8 cm x 7 cm x 7.6 cm).
