Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A charming cast-bronze oil lamp with a flared ring foot attached to the bottom of the teardrop-shaped body. The vessel has a rounded shoulder, a circular lid attached with a loop, a ring handle on the verso, and a wide wick spout. The lid handle assumes the form of an adorable rabbit with perky ears and a pinched face, its head turned backwards towards the imposing eagle standing above with broad wings, powerful legs, and an aquiline beak. Smooth layers of green and brown patina cover each component of the lamp and make this example replete with skillful stylization and an elegant presentation. Size: 5.25" L x 2.5" W x 4.6" H (13.3 cm x 6.4 cm x 11.7 cm).
