Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. Cast via the cire perdue (lost wax) process, a decorative leaded bronze oil lamp stand comprised of a tall stem embellished with three bulbous nodes and flaring at the upper end to a circular integral platform for displaying an oil lamp, all upon three curvilinear legs with lion paw feet. Given the care that went into fashioning this stand, one can only imagine the handsome oil lamp it once displayed. Size: 6.25" W x 7.125" H (15.9 cm x 18.1 cm)

Scholars have noted that bronze lamps and lamp stands were more coveted than those made from pottery during ancient times. Given this, they were most likely regarded as heirlooms reserved for only the wealthiest households. Bronze lamps along with stands like this example were probably kept and preserved for at least three generations due to their high value.
