Description:

Roman Empire, ca. 200 CE. This is a fantastic cast bronze oil lamp with a horse head on the end of the handle. The horse's features are finely formed, including a flowing mane. The body of the lamp is simply shaped but clearly made with a high degree of skill, and the its strong form complements the star of the show, the horse's head. Oil lamps such as these would be filled with olive oil, have a wick placed inside of them, and used to light homes, shops, holy places, and many other places throughout the Roman world; they were one of the most ubiquitous objects in antiquity. Items like these remind us of the everyday lives of the people who would have used them. This particular example is much finer than the average, and probably was made for and belonged to a member of the Roman elite, who would have passed it down as a family heirloom. Given the horse's head, it may have belonged to a family that had members in the Roman cavalry (the Auxilia). Size: 9" L x 3.75" W x 5" H (22.9 cm x 9.5 cm x 12.7 cm)
