Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A rare and quite remarkable bronze figure of a nude man holding a tabula or votive plaque inscribed in Ancient Greek with the name of 3 constellations: Auriga (AHNIOXEOII), Hydra (AYDPAPHI), and Orion (AOPIONII). Standing contrapposto, the man wears only helmet while carrying the tabula with one hand, his other arm falling to his side. These 3 constellations written on his banner were likely a votive wish dating from Hellenistic Greece and then adopted by the Romans. A fascinating example of the importance of astronomy in Ancient Rome! Size: 2.5" W x 5.5" H (6.4 cm x 14 cm)

Provenance: private New Jersey, USA collection, acquired on the New York City art market, before 2010
