Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A cast bronze phalera, a sculpted button awarded to and worn by Roman soldiers on their breastplates. This example is in the form of a bird, possibly an eagle (symbol of the Roman legions) or possibly a duck (a very common Roman motif), with a long body, wide tail feathers, an arched neck, and its head pointing downward. Two rounded projections on the underside of the bird's flat body allowed it to be attached to clothing. Comes with custom stand. Size: 1.5" L x 0.6" W x 0.5" H (3.8 cm x 1.5 cm x 1.3 cm); height on stand: 3" (7.6 cm).
