Description:

Roman Empire, Ca 2nd century CE. Fine bronze cast statuette of the god Mercury. He stands contraposto holding a purse in his right hand, his herald's staff, or caduceus in his left. As messenger of the gods he wears winged shoes (now missing) and wings at the side of his cap. Because of his activities as messenger and guide he was a traveler never at rest - the traveler's long cloak, a chlamys, is seen hanging over his left forearm. A fine example! Custom stand. 2-7/8" H. Provenance: Ex: Dr. Charles Smithen collection, Palm Beach, Fl, acquired before 1990. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
