Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A leaded bronze circular medallion cast via the lost wax (cire perdue) technique depicting a relief portrait of Minerva (Greek Athena), the goddess of wisdom, poetry, commerce, and medicine. The feminine visage protruding from the front bears almond-shaped eyes smooth cheeks surrounded by a voluminous coiffure with lengthy bangs. A pair of ear-like protrusions atop her head is suggestive of the lower brim of her traditional helmet. Lead remains within the verso indicate that this medallion was slightly weighted, and fine brown and green patina envelops the entire piece. Lucite display stand for photography purposes only. Size: 2.6" Diameter (6.6 cm)

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-Hans Hagmann collection, Germany 1970s
