Rome, ca. 1st Century CE. An early imperial bronze casting of a lionness, seated with from paws extended downward in a powerful pose, with strikingly delicate facial features of eyes, nose, forehead, ears, hair, and wide open mouth, with muscular detailing on body and legs, long tail, and claws. Excellent formed patina adds to the striking nature of this piece, a symbol of the strength of the early Roman Empire. 1-3/4"H. Custom stand.

Provenance: ex-Private German Collection acquired in the 1970s.
