Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A cast bronze fountain spout in the form of a lion's head, proud and fierce with a curly mane and an open mouth bearing fangs that one can imagine is roaring vociferously. Eyes, nose, teeth, ears, and mane are all skillfully rendered. Chances are, the artist who created the mold for this piece actually saw lions, perhaps at the Roman Forum or in an amphitheater local to his area. A wonderful piece with gorgeous green patina. Size: 2.25" L x 1.25" H (5.7 cm x 3.2 cm); 2.25" H (5.7 cm) on included custom stand.
