Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A cast bronze, concave applique of a lion's head, shown proud and fierce with a huge, flowing mane and an open mouth that you can imagine roaring. Its long tongue hangs down and out of its mouth. Eyes, nose, and mane are all excellently depicted; the artist who made the mold had probably seen lions, perhaps at the Roman Forum or in an amphitheatre local to their area. This would have been a fierce applied addition to any Roman item, attached using the two projecting tabs that extend from the back of the piece. Size: 1.2" W x 1.25" H (3 cm x 3.2 cm); 2.05" H (5.2 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private New York, USA collection; ex American private collection since the 1960s
