Description:

Roman, Republic to Imperial period, ca. 3rd BCE to 4th century CE. A pair of cast bronze signet rings each etched with a symbolic marking on the ovoid bezel face. The thicker ring has linear markings that slant out from a central line - forming an X shape, which was representative of military legions. The other ring is a thinner band with an abstract and highly simplified horned animal facing to left, perhaps a stag or ram. Signet rings were used as stamps to sign or mark documents, but they also were used to indicate rank or status. Size of legionary bezel: 0.6" L x 0.45" W (1.5 cm x 1.1 cm); opening: 0.875" Diameter (2.2 cm); US ring size: 6.5; stag ring: US ring size 7.5 to 8
