Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A charming bronze horse finial, modeled in a sprightly pose with the front right leg raised and a generally perky countenance presenting wide open eyes, a neatly manicured mane, a naturalistic snout, a youthful form, and a long tail. Horses signified power and military prowess in ancient Rome. In addition, they were symbolic of the god Neptune as well as the Roman legions. A wonderful ancient bronze work with rich green patina. Size: 2.125" L x .875" W x 2.375" H (5.4 cm x 2.2 cm x 6 cm)

  • Condition: Expected surface wear and normal indentations to pedestal base commensurate with age. Small loss to lower edge of left proper side of pedestal base with three minute perforations above. Loss to raised front leg as shown. Form is otherwise very good, and bronze has develped a wonderful patina over the ages.
