Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A fabulous cast-bronze head of the deity Serapis, the god of fertility and the afterlife. Serapis was a Graeco-Egyptian god who first appeared around the time of Alexander the Great and is a combination of the attributes of the Egyptian god Osorapis (himself a composite of Osiris and Apis) with the attributes of a number of Greek gods including Zeus, Hades, Helios, and Dionysus. Here, Serapis has his bushy beard surrounding his face and wears a conical helmet with a gently-curving crest. A striking example covered in dense layers of light-green and dark-green patina. Custom lucite display stand included. Size: 1.25" W x 2.3" H (3.2 cm x 5.8 cm); 3.625" H (9.2 cm) on included custom stand.
