Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A stunning cast bronze handle with a beautiful depiction of the front end a galloping horse at one end. The equine figure is delineated with a well-defined mane, ear, eye, and nose. Horses signified power and military prowess in the Classical World. In addition, they were symbolic of the god Neptune as well as the Roman legions. A wonderful ancient bronze work with rich green and russet patina. Size: 6.5" W x 4.5" H (16.5 cm x 11.4 cm); 5.875" H (14.9 cm) on included custom stand.

  • Condition: Horse on one end of handle is missing. Normal surface wear commensurate with age with areas of abrasion as shown. Bronze has developed a gorgeous green patina - quite bright in many areas.
