Description:

Rome, ca. 2nd / 3rd Century CE. Imperial bronze mirror with a riveted rim and fine concentric lines. The other side would have been burnished for reflection. A lotus blossom at the join of the slung handle to the disk. The handle with a knob on the bottom. Nice spotted patina with neat traces of the cloth the mirror was wrapped in for burial. Height 9.4" (23.8 cm), diameter of mirror portion 4-3/4" (12 cm).

Provenance: Ex-private collection of the Professor of Pharmacology Franz Gross (1913-1984), Bottmingen (Switzerland), acquired prior to 1983.
