Description:

Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A gorgeous cast bronze boss with a high relief bust of Minerva at its center. Minerva is depicted with her face turned slightly away, as if looking into the distance. She wears a crown-like headdress and has a deep V-neck created by what is either a thick garland or hanging medallion around her neck. Her breasts are gently suggested low mounds below that. The boss flattens outward into a round disc, with two small perforations at either side and a large rectangular perforation at the top for attachment. Minerva was the Roman interpretation of the Greek goddess Athena; the Romans did not stress her warrior aspects, but instead her wisdom and knowledge. This boss would have decorated a piece of furniture. Size: 4.4" W x 4.35" H (11.2 cm x 11 cm); 5.55" H (14.1 cm) on included custom stand.
