Description:

**Originally Listed At $2000**

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. A high-quality cast bronze finial in the form of a prancing horse. The horse is depicted with a finely detailed mane and coat - the coat requires you to look closely to see the lightly stippled texture! The patina is a beautiful grey-green and does not obscure any of the details of the horse. Finials like this one served as decorations on vessels, usually attached mechanically rather than cast (hence the plinth). Horse motifs were signs of power and military prowess, symbolic of the god Neptune as well as the Roman legions. Size: 3.75" L x 3.75" H (9.5 cm x 9.5 cm); 4.5" H (11.4 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: ex private New York City, USA collection; ex Safani Gallery, New York, USA, late 1990s
