Description:

Rome, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. A bronze signet ring decorated with an incised stylized eagle, wings outstretched and head turned to one side. The eagle is an attribute of Jupiter (Greek Zeus), the most powerful of the Olympian gods who would also assume the form of an eagle to observe his earthly children or to carry off lovers. Associated with strength and power, the eagle also became a Roman military symbol. In 43 BC Augustus founded the V Macedonia legion with the eagle as its emblem. Eventually the practice of carrying bronze eagle standard known ans an aquila in front of marching armies became widespread in the Roman empire. This is depicted on Trajan's Column, and bronze eagle standards that have survived the tests of time. Size: 0.95" W x 0.55" H (2.4 cm x 1.4 cm); US ring size: 3
