Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A wonderful ladle cast via the lost wax (cire perdue) process with two scoops joined via a long handle with a flat, striated central panel (perhaps making it easier to hold) and matching termini, a perforated strainer at one end and a solid scoop facing the opposite direction at the other. Note that strainer is punched with tiny holes in a composition that creates a four petaled blossom or leaf. The bronze presents green and russet patina throughout. The Romans drank wine nearly every day, and it was available to people at every level of society - slaves, soldiers, farmers, and elites. Strainers were necessary to remove dregs from their wine. A bronze ladle with a strainer at the opposite end like this would have been a fine item owned by a wealthy family. Size: 11" L x 2.25" (scoops) in diameter (27.9 cm x 5.7 cm)

Provenance: private Davis collection, Houston, Texas, USA; ex-Artemission, London, United Kingdom; ex-Mr. David Lewis collection
