Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A large, beautifully preserved cast bronze oil lamp with a brass chain for suspension. The body is disc-shaped, with a wide, thin lid capped by a thin columnar handle. The lamp stands on an integrated, wide foot. From opposite sides of the lamp, there are two projecting spouts, each with a duck- or goose-shaped hook rising from its upper edge. A chain, composed of brass loops, is attached with wide rings to each of the duck heads so that the lamp could be hung; the chains meet roughly two-thirds up their height and merge into a single strand. A heavy iron hook is attached to the top of this. It is easy to imagine this elegant lamp suspended in a room, casting light from both of its spouts. Size: 11" W x 3.75" H (27.9 cm x 9.5 cm)

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-Richard Wagner collection, Cape Cod, Massachusetts, USA, acquired in the 1970s
