Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. An adorable bronze figurine of a dog in a bowing position with head angled upward as though about to pounce forward. His perky ears point up as though in high alert, just above a furrowed brow and lengthy snout. His mouth is slightly open as though letting out a low growl, while his petite tail extends from his posterior. Note the careful attention to detail in his incised toes and recessed eyes. Man's -- and woman's -- best friend today was also the best friend of the Romans, even mentioned in Roman legal code as guardians of the home and domesticated animals. The pose and tapered snout of this pooch recalls one of the most famous dogs in antiquity - the Roman mosaic from Pompeii of a dog on a chain that warns, "CAVE CANEM" - Beware of Dog! Size: 2.2" W x 1.3" H (5.6 cm x 3.3 cm)
