Description:

Roman, early Imperial Period, ca. 1st to early 2nd century CE. A fine example of a forged bronze dish that could be used as a large serving bowl or a shallow wash basin. The circular vessel has a flat base and squat walls with a smooth rim, and a frontal, shell-form applique has a pair of pierced suspension tabs from which an arched handle with baluster terminals is suspended. Thick layers of green, russet, and blue-green patina envelope the entire vessel in color. Size: 12" L x 11.75" W x 2.1" H (30.5 cm x 29.8 cm x 5.3 cm)

Provenance: private Orange County, California, USA collection, purchased before 2000; ex-Gabrielle Gebhardt collection, Germany, acquired from a private Bavarian collection
