Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. An incredible cast bronze amulet in the form of a wooden club with realistic-looking knobs projecting from the sides, made to be worn by wrapping a strap around its upper portion. The club tapers to a narrow end with a flat butt. These items are known as Hercules clubs (Heracles, Herakles), and metal versions are found throughout the Roman Empire during this time period, including into Roman Britain, where an example found in Cambridgeshire displayed evidence for Celtic modification of the design. Indeed, the amulets were most popular in the fringes of the Empire, among the Germanic peoples, who, according to Tacitus, had a particular affinity for the story of Hercules. Size: 0.55" W x 2.55" H (1.4 cm x 6.5 cm); 3.25" H (8.3 cm) on included custom stand.
