Description:

Roman Empire, ca. 1st century BCE to 1st century CE. Perhaps one of the most cruel of all ancient military devices. Bronze 4-pointed "jack" that regardless of how it lands, always has one spike sticking upward. Used by miltary encampments to secure the area around the camp so no one can sneek up at night. Also used on the battle field to slow the enemy and the enemy's horses. Can you imagine the discomfort a horse would feel, and its reaction, when one of these pierced the bottom of their foot. One of the finest we have ever seen! Size: About 1-3/4"H. Provenance: Ex-private UK collection before 2000, acquired at Trinity Antiques. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. #109891
