Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Roman, early Imperial Period, ca. 1st century CE. A beautiful cast-bronze buckle of an ovoid form with a scalloped edge surrounding an intricate scene depicting Bacchus (Greek Dionysus), the god of wine and drunken revelry. Dionysus is shown seated and facing slightly to the left while surrounded by dense foliage motifs and bunches of large grapes, with his right arm held aloft as if ushering in guests, and his left hand grasping the neck of a piriform flagon. A petite hook on the verso showcases how the buckle would have attached to clothing or personal accoutrements, and smooth brown patina envelops the entire buckle. Size: 3.375" L x 1.2" W (8.6 cm x 3 cm)

Provenance: private New Jersey, USA collection, acquired 2015; ex-private Leesleep collection, Trinity Antiques, United Kingdom
