Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A cast-bronze bread stamp pendant of a square form with a small, integral suspension loop on the verso. The stamp face is recessed with drilled holes at each corner as well as four raised Latin letters, three of which are fused into a single contiguous symbol, which were imprinted onto fresh bread dough just before baking. Bread stamps were an important piece of technology in the Classical world and were used to signify that bread came from an authentic bakery, was made by a specific baker, or was intended for a specific family. There was also bread made to be freely distributed, and such loaves were stamped with the corresponding information. Custom museum-quality display stand included. Size: 1.4" W x 1.45" H (3.6 cm x 3.7 cm); 2.8" H (7.1 cm) on included custom stand.
