Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 3rd to 4th century CE. A cast bronze and brass scale with the beam, chains, and balance pans all attached! The scale has a ring at the top for suspension and a fulcrum with a balance indicator. The flat balance pans are suspended from three chains that join at the tips of the beam. A wonderful green patina covers the surface of the instrument. Such scales were essential for merchants to properly and fairly make measurements to keep the economy running throughout the Roman Empire.
