Description:

Rome, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. A cast bronze balsamarium depicting a finely modeled bust of a male satyr, with a naturalistically rendered face, his head slightly tilted to the right, intricately delineated locks adorning his head with two pointed ears and an animal skin shirt identifying him as the fun-loving satyr that he is. Finished with twin loops and a section of a hinge lid on the back of his coiffure. Superb detail and artistry. Gorgeous green patina! Vessels of this type are thought to have been used as oil containers by athletes. Size: 3.75" W x 5" H (9.5 cm x 12.7 cm)
