Description:

Rome, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 4th century BCE. A finely-cast bronze applique, designed to go on a piece of furniture, a saddle, or some other area in need of decoration in Roman life. It is in the shape of a bust of Mithras. Symbolism like this is part of the cult of Mithras that was found throughout the most expansive periods of the Empire from Roman Britain (a temple to Mithras can still be seen in the modern City of London) to its eastern coasts in the ancient-places-turned-colonies of Thracia and Dacia. Size: 1.35" W x 2" H (3.4 cm x 5.1 cm)
