Description:

Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A detailed cast bronze applique with a high relief bust of a female warrior, probably Bellona, companion of Mars, at its center. She is depicted with her face turned slightly away and upward, as if looking into the distance. She wears a tall, crested helmet, with long, curled hair falling from it to rest along her shoulders. Her flowing, folded clothing forms a deep V-neck, with her breasts gently suggested below it. She wears a medallion or amulet that appears to be in the shape of a face on her chest. This applique would have decorated a piece of furniture or a bronze vessel. Bellona was the personification of valor, and temples dedicated to her have been found in areas where imperial legions traveled, in France, Germany, Britain, and North Africa. Size: 3.2" W x 4.2" H (8.1 cm x 10.7 cm)

  • Condition: Well preserved details on surface, with a rich, dark green, almost black patina. A recent owner has drilled very shallowly into the back of the head, presumably for hanging the piece. Small area of corrosion where the hair meets the neck.
