Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca 1st to 4th century CE. Hand-carved from a single bovine or ungulate bone, a spoon with a short handle and an elongated bowl. The handle is carved with three incised lines that form two ridges and a spherical tip. The handle is tubular but widens slightly and flattens, forming the neck, which is incised with a linear motif and a "x" shape. The ovoid bowl is broad and shallow with a thin lip. This spoon may have been used for dining and has developed a creamy brown patina. The Romans notoriously ate with their hands while reclining, but also used spoons for extracting snails and shellfish. Size: 6.5" L x 1" W (16.5 cm x 2.5 cm)

Provenance: ex-Phoenicia Holyland Antiquities, New York City, New York, USA, acquired in 1992; ex-private Mr. Khabbazi collection
