Description:

Rome, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A marvel of meticulous technique and expressive iconography, this carved bone chariot attachment depicts a fierce animal, most likely a wolf with flattened ears, referring to the legendary she-wolf associated with the founding of Rome who rescued the just as legendary twins Romulus and Remus from the Tiber River and cared for them until a herdsman named Faustulus found the raised them. Lucite mount. Size: 1.875" L x 1.375" W (4.8 cm x 3.5 cm); 3.125" H (7.9 cm) on stand

The animal's visage is quite expressive with slanted leering eyes, protruding snout, and open mouth bearing sharp fangs and teeth. Incredibly detailed and finely worked piece; just look at that incised wavy coat! The artistry and technique involved in creating this finely detailed piece is paramount.
