Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 2nd century CE. A beautiful standing doll depicting a stylized goddess, perhaps Venus (Greek Aphrodite), the goddess of love, passion, and romance, hand-carved from cow bone or that of another ungulate. She stands with feet held closely together beneath an ankle-length skirt and is nude from the waist up. Her sensitive visage is composed of petite almond-shaped eyes, a slender nose above full lips, and a neatly-parted coiffure. Traces of drilled dowel holes and dowels are visible along each shoulder and held articulated arms, and a small tab on the back of her head suggests she was at one time adorned with an integral diadem. Size: 1.4" W x 6.4" H (3.6 cm x 16.3 cm); 7.1" H (18 cm) on included custom stand.
