Description:

Rome, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A petite conical cup comprised of translucent aqua blue glass, its body gently widening at the center before drawing inward and then widening out into a very slightly pronounced mouth. There are a few black streaks around the foot and on one side, the result of unexpected minerals in the glass making process, though here they seem almost decorative, especially around the base. The body of the vessel was formed by blowing the glass when it was hot; later, two shallow bands were wheel cut into the wide part around the middle. Size: 2.95" W x 3.75" H (7.5 cm x 9.5 cm)

  • Condition: Intact, with light surface encrustation and a few shallow scratches commensurate with age. Vessel possesses a pontil scar or mark which indicates that the vessel was free-blown. (The absence of such a mark would suggest that the work was either mold-blown or that the mark was intentionally smoothed away or wore away over time.)
