Description:

Rome, ca. 2nd to 4th century CE. A striking pilgrim flask, with a translucent green body of an elegant flattened teardrop shape, a graduated tubular neck that resolves in a slightly flared spout and folded rim, as well as a pair of sinuous blue-green trail handles joining neck to shoulders. Pilgrim flasks like this example were made by blowing a flask of a standard shape and then compressing it to a flattened form. The name of this vessel derives from the canteen-like bottles once carried by pilgrims. Of course this fragile vessel would have been unsuitable for this purpose. Scholars have also suggested that flasks like this were used as holy oil containers. Custom stand. Size: 2.25" W x 3.75" H (5.7 cm x 9.5 cm); 4.75" H (12.1 cm) on stand
