Roman, Imperial Period, Vitellius, ca. 69 CE. A billon tetradrachm. (12.4 g) Egypt, Alexandria. Obverse: Laureate head of Vitellius right. Dated RY 1 (69 CE). Reverse: Nike advancing left, holding wreath and palm frond; LA (date) to left. Ex CNA IV, Mail Bid Sale, September 21, 1988, lot 400264. Cp, Köln 260-2; Dattari (Savio) 340; K&G 19.1; RPC I 5372.

The Roman mint in Alexandria was one of the provincial Roman mints, tasked with issuing coins of bronze, silver, and billon (an alloy of the two); the main mint in Rome, meanwhile, controlled gold coinage. Many of the coins found in the eastern provinces of Rome came from Alexandria.
