Description:

Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A dazzling unguentarium formed from translucent, aubergine-hued glass with stunning flakes of purple and rainbow iridescence naturally adorning the exterior. Boasting an elegant silhouette, the ancient vessel presents an elongated ovoid body with a slanted shoulder that tapers to a narrow neck and broad, flared rim, all sitting upon a round yet stable base. Unguentaria like this example would have held precious oils or sweet and floral perfumes at Roman ladies' toilette. A truly breathtaking vessel that exemplifies all the opulence of the ancient Roman Empire! Size: 1.5" Diameter x 3.8" H (3.8 cm x 9.7 cm)

Provenance: private Lemont, Illinois, USA collection, acquired in the 1980's

  • Condition: Intact and excellent with gorgeous iridescence. Pontil mark on underside of base. A pontil scar or mark indicates that a vessel was free-blown, while the absence of such a mark suggests that the work was either mold-blown or that the mark was intentionally smoothed away or wore away over time.
