Roman, Imperial Period, Antoninus Pius, ca. 138 to 161 CE. AR denarius (3.54 g), probably 139 CE, Rome Mint. Obverse: Bare head of emperor facing right. Reverse: Clasped right hands holding caduceus. RIC37. Size: 0.5" W (1.3 cm)

Antoninus Pius is known as one of the Five Good Emperors, son of Hadrian, and adoptive father of Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus. He built temples and theatres, and promoted learning by giving honors and money to teachers. He also preserved many of the laws that Hadrian had created and his reign was one of the most peaceful in the history of the Roman Empire.
