Description:

Roman Empire, Hadrian AE As. Rome Mint, ca. 132 to 135 CE. Obverse: HADRIANVS AVGVSTVS Laureate and draped bust right. Reverse: COS III P P Hadrian, wearing military dress, with cloak flying behind him, on horse prancing right, holding spear at rest in right hand; SC in exergue. RIC II: 717. Size: 1.05" W (2.7 cm); 8.5 grams

This coin is from late in Hadrian's reign (117 to 138 CE). Hadrian, the third of the Five Good Emperors, built one of the Roman Empire's most lasting monuments: Hadrian's wall, across northern England, as well as rebuilding the Pantheon and constructing the Temple of Venus and Roma. Hadrian famously traveled across the Empire, visiting nearly all of its provinces, and the figure of him on horseback on this coin speaks to his adventurous spirit and martial prowess.
