Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A beautiful and wearable Roman ring comprised of 98% gold (equivalent to 22K+ gold) with a thick shank, broad shoulders, and a shallow recess on the top. Set into the bezel atop the ring is an ovoid carnelian intaglio with the incised portrait of a high-status man facing to the left. The man presents with a wreath around his neck that is symbolic of victory, a piercing stare, a prominent nose, and a corkscrew-style coiffure. A delicate and exquisite example of fine Roman gold jewelry! Size (ring): 1.1" W x 0.8" H (2.8 cm x 2 cm); (intaglio): 0.7" L x 0.5" W (1.8 cm x 1.3 cm); quality of gold: 98% (equivalent to 22K+ gold); total weight: 8.2 grams; US ring size 3.5.
