Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd to 4th century CE. A fine 22K+ gold ring (comprised of 95% gold) with a smooth, curved band adorned by an ovoid eye agate cabochon of banded caramel brown and white hues. Surrounding the banded agate is a border of slight depressions in the gold that resemble a beaded strand. A fabulous and wearable example of ancient high-quality artistry! Size (ring): 1.125" W x 0.8" H (2.9 cm x 2 cm); (agate): 0.35" L x 0.25" W (0.9 cm x 0.6 cm); quality of gold: 95% (equivalent to 22K+ gold); total weight: 8.9 grams; US ring size 3.5.

Provenance: private Dere Family Collection, NYC, NY acquired in the 1980s/90s.

  • Condition: Ring shank is ovoid by design and can only accommodate a ring sizer up to size 3.5; it is much wider than it is tall. Minor abrasions to ring and agate, with one small casting flaw and one small indentation on one side, otherwise intact and very good. Great patina throughout.
