Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. An enchanting necklace featuring a chain made of twenty two 22 karat gold spheres (joined hemispheres) and 23 karat gold links, with a striking pendant comprised of a central, crescent-shaped garnet cabochon surrounded by a band of filigree loop motifs, a beaded border, a band of gold spheres - each with three granules adorning the top and separated by beaded rows of granules, with a final border of granules, and below this lunar form, five natural pearl danglers, perhaps representing stars of the celestial realm. Size: chain measures 16" L (40.6 cm); pendant 1.5" L x .875" W (3.8 cm x 2.2 cm); total weight: 15.4 grams

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-Frances Artuner collection, Belgium, acquired in the 1960s
