Rome, ca. 1st century BCE to 2nd century CE. Fine pair of hollow cast high (22+) kt gold hoop earrings, each nearly circular with applied decorative figurative motifs that are somewhat difficult to decipher and bezels for stones. Believe it or not, the Romans invented the “hoop earring” around 300 BCE. On occasion, hoop earrings were ornamented with finials representing animals, Maenads (the intoxicated women also known as Bacchae), slaves, or the Greek god Eros.
