An impressive Roman ring comprised of 20K+ gold (90% gold) and a large oval garnet intaglio (carved cabochon) depicting Mercury (Greek Hermes), messenger of the gods, standing in profile and holding various attributes, a purse full of money in one hand, and his herald's staff or caduceus in the other. The attention to detail is most impressive. Notice the drapery folds of his traveler's cloak (chlamys) falling from his shoulder and cascading over his forearm and his delicate profile. A truly exceptional work of wearable art from ancient Rome! Size: intaglio measures .375" W x .625" H (1 cm x 1.6 cm); opening measures .7" W x .875" H (1.8 cm x 2.2 cm); US ring size 3.75. Weight: 12.7 grams. Gold quality: 90% gold, equivalent to 20K+.

  • Condition: Some nicks to the garnet intaglio but imagery is still legible. Gold shank is excellent save expected scuffs/scratches commensurate with age. Gold has developed a wonderful warm patina.
