Ancient Rome, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. 20K gold ring with an elegantly flattened shank meeting a raised oval bezel containing an amethyst intaglio engraved with a duck, heron, or crane. Interestingly, these birds were domesticated pets, almost as popular as dogs among the ancient Romans according to Beazley.
