Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. An 18K gold earring created as a fashionable accessory as well as a display of wealth. Some scholars have argued that jewelry may have been worn to protect the wearer against bad luck during the classical era. The earring shows a beautiful golden hue, and the design is comprised of a projecting shield decorated with four filigree loops around a central granule, the entire composition is surrounded by a filigree border, and joined to a hoop comprised of twisted wires, one of which presents a coiled design. Size: .875" L x .25" W (2.2 cm x 0.6 cm); 3.4 grams
