Rome, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A very large 14K gold pendant of a scalloped oval, perhaps floral design - comprised of folded, hammered 14K gold sheet - with a raised bezel in the center that is fitted with a blue-green, almost aqua, glass cameo presenting the bust of a youth or youthful deity in 3/4 view. Eight suspension loops are positioned at the interstices of the 'petals', and a large suspension loop is at the top. A very rare example. Size: 1.5" L x 1.25" W (3.8 cm x 3.2 cm); cameo measures .5" L x .375" W (1.3 cm x 1 cm); total weight: 6.4 grams
