Description:

Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico to Guatemala, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. An adorable stone effigy bowl or mortar in the form of a canine such as a coyote or dog. The basin is shallow and could hold only small quantities, so this elaborate carving may have had a ritualistic use, perhaps offerings. The Maya revered canids, remains of dogs have been found in burials as it was believed dogs guided human souls to the afterlife and other myths linked dogs with rebirth. Coyotes were also legendary trickster figures in Mesoamerican mythology and represented by the coyote god of music and dance, known as Huehuecoyotl in Nahuatl language.
